The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between job satisfaction, job performance and job satisfaction-job performance discrepancy among nurses in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey. The study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia. The sample consisted of 313 nurses who were working in the different units of the hospital. The data was collected using the validated Arabic version of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) and the Performance Rating Scale (PRS). The findings indicated that nurses who work in the intensive care unit are more satisfied with their job than those who work in the paediatric department, the operation theatre and the orthopaedic department. A direct relationship was found between the job satisfaction of the nurses and their job performance. The nurses' scores on the dimensions of Job Satisfaction (Work group cooperation, Hospital management, Job security, Job knowledge, Job security, Company social environment, Work environment and Remuneration) in the Performance Rating Scale were significantly higher in the group of nurses who reported high job performance. The study suggests that increased job satisfaction among the nurses improves the job performance of the nurses and high job satisfaction is directly related to high job performance.
